Stephen Colbert on Wednesday took on the final chapter of “muffingate,” the saga of the Justice Department allegedly spending $16 per muffin at a conference.
“Why would the government spend $16 on a muffin when they can go to Starbucks and get one for $14,” Colbert asked.
The myth of the $16 muffins had been debunked earlier, but the Justice Department last week once and for all set the record straight — but not without a little bureaucracy.
“A responsible use of your tax dollars is made clear in
the Audit of Department of Justice Conference Planning and Food and Beverage Cost Report,” Colbert said. “It’s 151 pages, proving there was no government money wasted on muffins. It’s thorough, folks.”
But there’s still hope for pundits out there, looking to sniff out more government waste, Colbert said. “Hopefully the Inspector General will be issuing a 300-page report investigating rumors this 150-page report on $16 muffins cost millions.”
