As part of Herman Cain’s efforts to tear down his latest accuser, Sharon Bialek, Cain has gone after her lawyer, Gloria Allred.
To be sure, Allred is a soft target. A cursory glance at Twitter Monday when it was announced that Allred would be bringing forward a Cain accuser showed few reporters and pundits with nice things to say about the woman who somehow seems to appear near the center of every sex scandal these days.
But one man is coming to Allred’s defense: Karl Rove.
From The Hill:
“Credibility matters here, and Gloria Allred — while she is a Democrat and a liberal Democrat and openly so — nonetheless, has been involved in a number of high-profile cases like Tiger Woods and others, where the charges have been borne out.
So this gives Ms. Bialek’s charges and accusations a little bit of credibility, and that’s what we’re talking about here — credibility.“
This is a very different view of Allred than Cain has, as he so eloquently put it on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Monday night:
Kimmel: have you considered hiring Gloria Allred as your attorney?
Cain: Uh…you almost made me say something that my handlers say that you should not say…let me put it to you this way: I can’t think of anything I would hire her to do! (laughter) I can’t think of a thing.
Cain and Rove have clashed before, with Cain channeling a distrust for President George W. Bush’s architect among the tea party set. (Donald Trump was also good at using that distrust to his advantage.)
But Rove might just have the last laugh this time. Anecdotal evidence out of Iowa today shows some Republican voters in that state are viewing Bialek (the woman now standing with Allred, of course) as a real problem for Cain. That suggests Rove might be on the right side of history when all is said and done with Cain.
