Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) leads by just two percentage points in the latest poll of the U.S. Senate election in North Carolina, according to a new Monmouth poll.

The North Carolina race has been closely followed as an important seat for Democrats to take in order to regain the majority.

Burr came out ahead of Democratic Senate candidate Deborah Ross, 45-43, with Libertarian candidate Sean Haugh polling at 4 percent.

TPM’s Senate Scoreboard rates North Carolina as a tossup.

Ross, a former member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, polled two points ahead, 46-44, of Burr in a recent NBC/WSJ/Marist poll of North Carolina registered voters.

Monmouth had not previously polled the U.S. Senate election in North Carolina.

This poll was conducted Aug. 20-23 among 401 likely North Carolina general election voters, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percent.

TPM’s PollTracker Average for the U.S. Senate election in North Carolina shows Burr leading Ross, 44.7 to 44.
