With just a little more than a week until the May 3 Indiana GOP primary, the first public poll of the race gives Donald Trump a six-point lead over Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) among likely voters.

The WTHR/Howey Politics Indiana poll, which was conducted by Public Opinion Strategies, showed Trump at 37 percent, Cruz at 31 percent and Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 22 percent.

Indiana is a key state for Cruz, who must do well there to offset Trump’s advantage in mid-Atlantic states like Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The poll of 500 likely voters was conducted April 18-21. The margin of error was 4.3 percentage points.
