Joe Heck, left, R-Nev., speaks with Dr. Daliah Wachsa after a roundtable event in Henderson, Nev. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s retirement has created a rare open seat that offers Republicans their one real shot at winning a state now held by the Democrats. With their slim Senate majority under siege around the country, Republicans are determined to replace Reid with one of their own, Heck, a wonkish and hard-working Army reservist. Rep. Joe Heck (R-NV) has taken a 3-point lead over Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto in a new Monmouth University poll of the U.S. Senate race in Nevada.

The U.S. Senate election in Nevada has been closely followed as candidates try to fill Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) seat. This latest poll caused Nevada’s U.S. Senate race to shift to lean Republican on TPM’s Senate Scoreboard.

Heck leads the former Nevada attorney general, 46-43, with Independent American Party candidate Tom Jones behind at 4 percent.

When Monmouth polled the Nevada Senate race in July, Heck led by two points, 42-40, with Jones at 5 percent.

The Monmouth poll was conducted Sept. 11-13 over the phone among 406 likely Nevada voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percent.

TPM’s PollTracker Average for the U.S. Senate race in Nevada shows Heck leading Masto, 46.5 to 43.5.

  1. If there’s one thing I feel pretty sure of it’s that Harry Reid will move heaven, hell, and earth to make sure both Masto and Clinton win his state. I’m not unskewing, but I also believe that some of these western states with large Hispanic populations are showing much better numbers for Republicans because the Hispanic population is being dramatically underpolled. Likely voter models, I believe, don’t include very motivated first time voters and voters who’ve only voted sporadically in the past.

  2. Is his slogan, “What the Heck?”

Clearly, the Democrats need to give 'em Hell in Nevada.

Agreed. We saw the same thing in Harry’s last race against Angle. IIRC Angle was actually ahead for most of Sept & Oct, but the final vote was a better than 5% win for Harry. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for the same here.

  4. That’s exactly what I was thinking about as a typed my post.

  5. Was thinking, Oh Hell…it’s Heck…

Bet that guy goes over big in the desert regions of Nevada. Just a guess.
