A poll released Thursday showed that 57 percent of Americans oppose Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims entering the United States.

Trump had said Monday that he would institute a “complete and total” shutdown of Muslims immigrating to the country.

The NBC/WSJ poll showed broad support for the ban among Republicans — 42 percent supported the ban and 36 opposed it. But among Republicans likely to vote in the primaries, 38 percent supported it and 39 percent said they were against the ban.

Seventy-five percent of Democrats and 55 percent of independents said they opposed the ban.

The poll was conducted from Dec. 8-9 among 495 respondents. It had a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.
