WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is expected to impose sanctions on more Russians under a law passed last year in response to alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Two Trump administration officials say the sanctions could come as early as Thursday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the actions ahead of an announcement.

It was unclear how many Russians would be hit with sanctions or who exactly would be targeted. But under the same law, the administration in January released a list of powerful Russian oligarchs and politicians. Some who were on that list are expected to be targeted.

The State Department declined to comment.

Last month, the U.S. targeted 19 Russians and five other entities with sanctions in the first use of the new law.

  1. The Trump administration doesn’t lead, it follows. Like seaweed swaying under turbulent waters! No plan or strategy!

  2. More smoke and mirrors, Trump and the GOP are Putin’s lapdogs.

  3. Absolutely. The Tumpists want those oligarchs banned from the US so that Mueller’s guys can’t interdict the Russkie’s at the airport and shake them down for information and evidence against Trump.

OMG, TPM, get it together. The "list" of Russian oligarchs Trump allegedly targeted was a lazy, sloppy copy and paste of a Forbes list. Geez, let's have some accuracy.

"The Treasury Department on Monday released a list of 96 Russian business executives who could face U.S. sanctions for their alleged proximity to the Kremlin. Instead of compiling the list through a serious, independent review, however, the department appeared to have simply copied Forbes's list of 96 Russians with estimated net worths of at least $1 billion."

  5. Bingo!

Its not coincidence that right after CNN breaks a story that Mueller is grabbing oligarchs for questioning and searches as soon as they land, that Trump wants to put sanctions against those very same people.

It has nothing to do with interfering with the election. It has everything to do with Trump trying to shut people up so they won’t rat him out.
