ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A St. Paul police officer has resigned a month after a post he made on Facebook urged drivers to run over protesters who rallied against the police killings of two black men in the Twin Cities last year.

The St. Paul Police Department said Wednesday that Sgt. Jeff Rothecker has resigned his position with the department, effective immediately. The police statement said no additional details were available.

Rothecker had apologized earlier for the post. He was put on leave while the Police Department investigated.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported the social media message said, “Run them over,” and told people how to avoid being charged with a crime if they struck someone during the Martin Luther King Day march and rally on a bridge linking St. Paul and Minneapolis.
