White House senior adviser Jared Kushner raised red flags among national security staffers early on in his time in the administration over his close relationship with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, including their use of private communication channels to talk, like WhatsApp, CNN reported.

Kushner mitigated the concerns by providing staffers with readouts of their conversations afterward.

The pair’s close ties has come under scrutiny in recent days as the Trump administration grapples with how to respond to the disappearance — and the alleged murder — of Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi. Kushner has been attempting to defuse the situation behind-the-scenes, but is avoiding the spotlight to let Secretary of State Mike Pompeo publicly handle the crisis.
