Republican governors are getting a very different reading from the midterm tarot cards than President Donald Trump, putting some of the blame on the President for making the party increasingly toxic to women and suburban voters.

According to a Friday Politico report, the governors are trying to telegraph to the President to tamp down his rhetoric, all part of a strategy to move away from attack ads and overall negativity.

“The Republican Party started to have problems before Trump ever arrived on the scene two years ago,” Gov. Larry Hogan (R-MD) told Politico. “Trump has exacerbated some of those issues and put a focus on” those demographic weaknesses.

The governors’ criticism has some in the White House nervous, as popular Republican governors Hogan or Charlie Baker (MA) could pose a primary risk to Trump in 2020.

  2. Kentucky’s Republican governor, Matt Bevin, is iffputting to more than just women! Perhaps they should consider their entire body of “work.”

  3. Are GOP Govs trying to out-projection Trump, or what?

  4. The focus on demographics makes me think these guys believe they have a structural problem that can be fixed by changing the messaging - the reality is their policies are toxic to growing segments of society and they are blind to that reality.
