A journalist and former Russia Today anchor who resigned on air in 2014 has filed as a candidate for the Democratic nomination to face off against Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX) in 2020.

“My resolution in 2019 is to do my part to help get this country back on track,” Liz Wahl wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday, linking to a Houston Chronicle article on 2020 candidates.

In 2014, speaking live on air from RT’s Washington, D.C. bureau, Wahl said: “I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin. I’m proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth, and that is why, after this newscast, I am resigning.”

The majority of Hurd’s border region district voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, and he won a narrow reelection in 2018 over Democratic challenger Gina Ortiz Jones.
