Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) doubled down on what it would take for Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to sink, telling reporters at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics in Manchester that any “lies” or “evidence” that corroborates Christine Blasey Ford’s story would disqualify him.
“Any nominee who lies to the committee, that is disqualifying,” Flake said, according to Politico. “If there’s evidence that comes back that corroborates Christine Ford’s story, then all of us will look at it that way.”
During an interview with “60 Minutes” on Sunday evening, Flake made similar remarks — that evidence that Kavanaugh lied to the Senate Judiciary Committee during his testimony combatting Blasey Ford’s claims of sexual assault would end the confirmation process.
Flake broke from his party last week when he said he wouldn’t vote to approve Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court until Democrats’ demands for an FBI probe into the allegations were met. The FBI is currently investigating the allegations, but Senate Republicans are still pushing for a vote on Kavanaugh before the end of the week.
Flake:
However, any other lies will be tolerated, and we will defend the nominee
Flake is so full of shit.
Remember what Clinton wa impeached for? Lying about sex, under oath
Flake smells something that could help his future political fortune. McConnel only cares about doing maximum damage to Democrats while he still holds the power.
So, there are now different categories of perjury and lies are NOT disqualifying as long as they’re about something other than sexually assaulting Dr. Ford?
And Flake will only vote no if the FBI, in just a few days, with artificially imposed limits, finds evidence that “corroborates” Dr. Ford’s already credible account? Like what? A dramatic “you can’t handle the truth!” moment when Kavanaugh spontaneously confesses during some live interview?
Let’s face it: Flake was always going to vote “yes” and this sham investigation was nothing but a publicity stunt to jump-start Flake’s campaign for whatever political office he’s thinking of running for next, combined with a game of political Three Card Monty designed to give the Republicans at least some minimal cover for putting a perjuring, credibly accused sexual predator, political hack on the United States Supreme Court.
I’m not so sure. Of course Flake would like to be President as would the other 99 members of the Senate. But he didn’t say that only lying about the attack on Dr. Ford would count. There is plenty has come out already and there are countless more stories to come.
I’d say the odds are 50:50 or even better that K is voted down. I think that’s what McConnell wants, since this wasn’t his guy in the first place. He’d rather run on “Those unfair Democrats trashed a good man” IMO.
