Support for same-sex marriage is high among younger members of the Republican Party, according to a Pew Research poll released Monday.

Sixty-one percent of Republicans age 18 to 29 support legalizing marriage for gay couples compared to 35 percent who oppose it, according to the survey. Only 27 percent of Republicans age 50 and over support same-sex marriage, however.

Support for gay marriage is higher among young Republicans than overall support. Fifty four percent of Americans support legalizing marriage for same-sex couples, according to Pew. Sixty-nine percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents support same-sex marriage.

Pew surveyed 1,821 adults via phone Feb. 14-23.
