The White House said for the first time Wednesday that the Islamic State “likely” bombed the Russian plane that crashed in Egypt last month, killing all 224 passengers on board.

An unnamed White House spokesperson told The Daily Beast “we assess it is likely that this was an ISIL terrorist attack.”

Egyptian authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, and Russia has not acknowledged the Islamic State’s role in the attack.

The Islamic State published a photo in its English-language magazine Wednesday of an improvised bomb purportedly used to bring down the plane over the Sinai Peninsula.
