The presumed frontrunner in the North Carolina Republican primary for Senate once said Obamacare is a “great idea” but that it just can’t be paid for.

In an interview on the Bill Lumaye Show in early February, North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis (R), the presumed frontrunner in the GOP primary, said that Obamacare is a “great idea that can’t be paid for.”

The comments were unearthed by North Carolina Democrats and highlighted by The Plum Line’s Greg Sargent. You can hear Tillis make the comments at the ninth minute or so in this audio.

Tillis has strongly criticized Obamacare and sought to tie it negatively to Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC), who he is hoping to unseat. In the same interview Tillis also said that he and his fellow lawmakers were taking every step possible to get rid of the law.

“If we could effectively nullify and repeal Obamacare in North Carolina we would do it,” Tillis said.

It’s actually not the first time Tillis has made these types of comments. He’s said that there does need to be health care reform, just not the type that comes through Obamacare.

“Republicans have made those proposals before,” Tillis said recently. “It’s not about that. It’s not about everything else in Obamacare that doesn’t work. So we do need health care reform. We don’t need something as large and complex and costly as the Affordable Care Act because it can’t work.”
