In a private call with donors, House Speaker Thom Tillis’s (R-NC) chief strategist, Paul Shumaker, said that the campaign has never found the Republican nominee for Senate leading Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) in internal polling.

Shumaker, according to The Washington Examiner’s Rebecca Berg, said an internal poll released Tuesday showing a tie with Hagan was the first time they’ve found the race being tied.

“This is the first time we’ve had it dead even,” Shumaker said. “We’ve consistently tracked two to three points down.”

Shumaker’s comments mean the Tillis campaign’s internal polling has followed most public polling which has generally (with some exceptions) shown Hagan leading the Republican state house speaker by a few points.

The TPM Polltracker average finds Tillis with a 0.3 point lead over Hagan.
