CNN guest and Republican strategist Tara Setmayer criticized Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s racial rhetoric on Monday, wondering at one point if his campaign spokeswoman, Katrina Pierson, was “one of the blacks” the real estate mogul employs to “clean up his mess.”
Setmayer, who is black, called Trump’s history with race “questionable,” noting that the real estate mogul “came out and said how much he loved ‘the blacks.'”
“We could go down the list of very questionable things that Donald Trump has said,” she said. “Maybe Katrina Pierson is one of ‘the blacks’ he likes since he pays her to clean up his mess every day on television.”
Setmayer and Pierson then got into a heated back-and-forth, with Pierson accusing Setmayer of “race-baiting.” Eventually, Pierson concluded that Trump was “winning, and that’s all that matters.”
Pierson appeared on CNN’s “Newsroom” to defend Trump’s refusal to disavow the support of prominent white nationalist David Duke, who is a former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard. Trump later said that he had a “lousy earpiece” in that interview.
