The top aide who Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) recently admitted saying “inappropriate” things to resigned Wednesday in order to focus attention on her family, AL.com reported.

“I have resigned as Senior Political Advisor to Governor Bentley and will no longer be paid from his campaign fund,” Bentley adviser Rebekah Mason said in the statement, as quoted by AL.com. “I have also ended my work with the Alabama Council For Excellent Government. My only plans are to focus my full attention on my precious children and my husband who I love dearly. They are the most important people in my life. Thank you for your prayers for our family.”

Mason’s resignation comes after a former state official fired by Bentley came forward with what he said was evidence that the governor and his aide had engaged in a long-rumored affair. Bentley later maintained in a news conference that he did not have a physical relationship with Mason, but did apologize for “the things that I said” that were reported in the press.
