President Obama on Saturday said that he found out that Hillary Clinton used a personal email account as secretary of state through the news.

CBS News’ Bill Plante on Saturday asked the president when he found out Clinton used her own email.

“The same time everybody else learned it through news reports,” Obama responded.

Plante then asked the president if he was “disappointed.”

“Let me just say that Hillary Clinton is and has been an outstanding public servant. She was a great secretary of state for me,” Obama said.

“The policy of my administration is to encourage transparency, and that’s why my emails, the BlackBerry I carry around, all those records are available and archived. And I’m glad that Hillary’s instructed that those emails that had to do with official business need to be disclosed,” he continued. “I think that the fact that she is putting them forward will allow us to make sure that people have the information they need.”

The New York Times reported last week that Hillary Clinton used a personal email account during her time as secretary of state. Following criticism for failing to use a government email address, particularly from the right, Clinton said that she asked the State Department to release her emails.

“I want the public to see my email,” she said in a Tweet addressing the reports about her email use.
