President Obama mentioned the recent slaying of three Muslim students in North Carolina during his speech on Wednesday about the dangers of violent extremism.

Obama spoke about the case while talking about instances of extremist violence that have struck the U.S., including the Boston Marathon bombing and the attack on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

“Most recently with the brutal murders in Chapel Hill of three young Muslim Americans,” Obama said. “Many Muslims are worried and afraid and I want to be as clear as I can be, as Americans, of all faiths and backgrounds, we stand with you in your grief and we offer our love and we offer our support.”

After the killings, police arrested a neighbor of the students who appeared to have numerous posts on Facebook indicating strong anti-theist views. Authorities said they would investigate whether the killings were a hate crime.
