The New York Times announced on Tuesday it had replaced its Washington bureau chief, Carolyn Ryan, with Washington editor Elisabeth Bumiller, according to Poynter.
It was a move that had been in the works for months, but had not yet been formalized, according to the report.
Ryan, who had been juggling campaign coverage with her bureau chief roles, will now focus on the newspaper’s campaign coverage as the publication’s senior editor for politics, Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet announced Tuesday in a memo to the staff.
Ryan was made Washington bureau chief in 2013.
“I look forward to campaign coverage driven by Carolyn’s creativity and dedication,” Baquet said in his memo to staff, according to Poynter.
Bumiller had previously covered the Pentagon and the White House.
“Elisabeth comes to the job with broad experience working overseas, writing books and covering the life of Washington as a Post style writer,” Baquet wrote in his memo to staff, according to Poynter. “With her commanding knowledge and spirit, I am confident she will guide our stellar Washington bureau as it covers all aspects of this defining chapter.”
