Ruth Bader Ginsburg is internet notorious. In the wake of her dissent on the striking down of the Voting Rights Act, the 81-year-old Supreme Court Justice inspired a Tumblr called “Notorious R.B.G.,” which cheekily compares her to rapper Notorious B.I.G. and generally celebrates her badass nature.
Ginsburg has called all the online attention “pleasing” and “funny,” even going so far as to say that she “keeps abreast of the latest that’s on the Tumblr.“
Even a baby dressed up as Ruth “Baby” Ginsburg for halloween:
Now, the fandom will be crystallized in print, with a new unobjective biography by blog creator Shana Knizhnik and MSNBC reporter Irin Carmon.
According to New York Magazine, Notorious R.B.G.: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg is due out in the fall and will combine reporting, feminist history, and photography. Carmon believe’s Ginsburg’s internet celebrity is due to how outspoken she’s been recently, at a time when there’s a derth of “unapologetically fierce” women in important positions :
“As the court has moved to the right and undone a lot of what R.B.G. and her generation fought for, she has let loose in a way that really resonates online, where people are frustrated about many of the same things.”
I thought Notorious RGB was a rapper.
