Las Vegas Review-Journal editor Mike Hengel announced his surprise departure to “stunned” staffers on Tuesday evening just days after conservative megadonor Sheldon Adelson confirmed his family had purchased the paper.

Hengel had led Nevada’s largest newspaper since 2010. His buyout is voluntary, he told staffers.

“I think my resignation probably comes a relief (sic) to the new owners, and it is in my best interest and those of my family,” he told staffers in the R-J newsroom.

Adelson’s family confirmed their purchase of the newspaper Thursday in an editorial alongside an investigative piece from the paper outing the casino titan as the owner — a claim he’d previously skirted.

  1. What’s the surprise? More to follow, soon to be replaced by Foxbots, war mongerers, Israeli lovers and others of similar ilk.

The others wish they could afford to follow him.

  3. Q: What were the 'Vegas odds on this?
    A: House always wins.

  4. Never argue with someone who buys ink by the barrel.

  5. Surprise? Not at all. When all these right winger Oligarchs buy up the US Media companies the 1st to go is the Chief Editor and then the entire editorial staff.

Look at the WSJ after Rupert the fascist racist acquired that business journal…he promised not to “clean house” and low and behold he cleaned house and installed his right wing disciples. There was a day when the WSJ Editorial page could be relied on for objective and level opinions on things like tax policy and Presidential Candidates - those days are long gone. The WSJ is now a right wing propaganda machine.

It will be interesting to see if the people of Las vegas stop buying and reading the Review-Journal…if they are smart, they boycott Sheldon’s new mouth piece.
