For “The Daily Show,” the arrival of a freshly minted GOP Congress in Washington has a clear upside: more opportunities to mock new Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), whom the host has often compared to a humanoid tortoise.

Host Jon Stewart began Thursday night’s episode in awe of McConnell’s latest claim on the Senate floor. After only two days in session, McConnell said the Republican-controlled Congress could claim responsibility for America’s recent economic turnaround.

“Come on!” Stewart shouted. “You’ve been in control of the Senate for two days!”

“Unless my calendar is broken, Senator,” he continued, “the general economic improvement trend started before the November elections.”

But Stewart suddenly realized “the truth.”

“If you rub Mitch McConnell’s shell,” he said to big laughs, “you will receive five years of business growth.” A graphic appeared of McConnell in his turtle form, housed in a giant, lamp-shaped shell.
