HBO’s John Oliver explained Scotland’s upcoming vote on independence and its “300-year arranged marriage” to England during his show on Sunday night.

Saying that “England has been a little bit of a dick since the honeymoon,” the “Last Week Tonight” host noted the issue of Scottish independence is confusing for Americans because they picture it as a scene from the movie “Braveheart” with Mel Gibson.

“Ah yes, nothing screams Scottish freedom quite like a millionaire Australian anti-Semite on horseback,” Oliver said.

He broke down the arguments on each side of the debate for and against Scottish independence and noted some of the financial backers on each side. Oliver said that of course J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter book series, was in favor of Scotland remaining within the UK.

“She famously wrote a book where a redhead played second-fiddle to a magical Englishman,” Oliver said.
