Indicted Ex-FIFA Vice President Cites ‘Onion’ Article In Defense (VIDEO)

In a video originally posted to Facebook on Sunday, ex-vice president of FIFA Jack Warner brandished a print-out of an article he said rebuked critics of the embattled world governing body of soccer.

The article’s headline: “FIFA Frantically Announces 2015 Summer World Cup In United States.”

“If FIFA is so bad, why is it the U.S. still wants to keep the FIFA World Cup?” Warner, who is currently facing extradition to the U.S., said.

The idea would appear odd, in light of the U.S. Justice Department’s recent indictments of Warner and other FIFA officials on allegations of rampant corruption.

The one hitch in Warner’s argument was that the article was pure satire — it was a post by The Onion.

The moment caught comedian John Oliver’s attention during his show “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday.

The post later disappeared from Warner’s Facebook.

  1. The worst part, as John Oliver pointed out last night- is that this article seemed so credible that the guy actually believed it- shows just how corrupt FIFA is.

  2. Keeping the dopes honest, one Onion article at a time.

  3. He is a former FIFA Vice President. Do we know whether he has suffers from sort of dementia? If not he has just laid the foundation for a terrific defense. He is just too dumb to be a big time crook.

  4. The IOC must be very happy. FIFA are amateurs compared to them.
