Fox News host Bill O’Reilly confronted Donald Trump Monday night over the presidential candidate’s comments this weekend suggesting that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is only considered a war hero because he was captured.

When asked why he made a discussion about veterans personal, Trump insisted that McCain has a poor record when it comes to helping veterans.

“He’s the guy. He’s supposed to be doing it. And I see him on television all the time, and he’s always talking, talking, but nothing gets done,” Trump said.

O’Reilly accused Trump of dodging the question.

“When asked about McCain, you got into his war record, and I think you would admit here tonight that was a mistake because John McCain was a hero and you know that,” O’Reilly said to Trump.

Trump then claimed that he said numerous times that he believes McCain is a war hero.

“You can backtrack into that, but the fact of the matter is we just played the clip,” O’Reilly hit back.

The Fox host then mentioned that Trump said he likes “people who weren’t captured” after mentioning that McCain was a prisoner of war.

“Now you know that wasn’t correct,” O’Reilly said. “Come on, Donald. You know the way that came off wasn’t correct.”

“You picked the wrong guy here, I think,” O’Reilly continued after detailing McCain’s work in the Senate related to Veterans Affairs.

Trump still would not back down.

“Regardless of work or not work, they’re suffering,” he said. “I see them all the time.”

“You’re right, they’re suffering,” O’Reilly responded. “But McCain shouldn’t be the whipping boy.”
