Vice President Joe Biden said in an interview that aired Tuesday that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is “new” to the fight against income inequality, unlike her opponent Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

Biden told CNN that Sanders “has credibility” on income inequality in the United States because he’s talked extensively on the topic.

“It’s relatively new for Hillary to talk about that,” Biden said. “Hillary’s focus has been other things up to now, and that’s been Bernie’s—no one questions Bernie’s authenticity on those issues.”

“But I think she’s come forward with some really thoughtful approaches to deal with the issue,” he added.

Biden clarified his comments about Clinton discussing income inequality during an interview Tuesday on NBC’s “Today.”

“What I meant was, for the last five years, she’s been engaged in foreign policy,” Biden said. “This has been Bernie’s mantra from the time he’s gotten involved. Even when income inequality wasn’t as serious as it is today, it was his drumbeat. And so that’s what I meant.”

Biden considered a presidential bid in the 2016 election, but announced in late October that he wouldn’t do so.
