Armstrong Williams, an advisor to Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson’s campaign, said Monday on MSNBC that he had warned the retired neurosurgeon he would be vetted when he ran for President.

Carson has recently railed against the media, saying that coverage of inaccuracies in his statements were “unfair” after they were fact checked by multiple media outlets.

Williams spent his appearance on “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” essentially saying “told you so” to the GOP hopeful.

“I have always said to him, and we go back and forth on this, that you know what, this is small stuff. It’s only going to become more harsher and more difficult and Dr. Carson — and I say this because I know him as many others also — is that he’s an honest man,” Williams said. “He’s a decent man. He’s a good man. And even in the vetting process, no one has proven anything to say that Dr. Carson has not been honest and that he’s been inaccurate.”

Williams said journalists need to be sure they’re reporting accurately, but that Carson realizes that the scrutiny will come.

“Yes, Dr. Carson does acknowledge as recent as within the last 12 hours the fact that he’s got to adjust himself to the scrutiny and not all the media is up to no good when they pursue stories,” Williams said.
