Al Franken was far better known as a comedian than a statesman before he was elected to the U.S. Senate, and he got back to those roots on stage at the Democratic National Convention Monday night with an extended riff on Donald Trump.
The Minnesota senator introduced himself as a “world-renowned expert on right-wing megalomaniacs. Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, and now, Donald Trump.”
Franken’s credentials include a “doctorate degree in megalomaniac studies from Trump University,” which he joked only required taking out a reverse mortgage on his home in order to pay tuition.
“Sure, [Trump] scammed a lot of people, but did you know that Trump University School of Ripping People off is ranked second in the nation, right behind Bernie Madoff University,” Franken ribbed.
The former “Saturday Night Live” writer and cast member also joked about Trump’s less-than-A-list cast of celebrity supporters.
“Trump University…is also about learning directly from success experts like Scott Baio, Mike Tyson, and of course, a life-size cutout of Mr. Trump himself,” Franken said, to laughs from the audience.
Franken finished his bit with a dig at another of the GOP nominee’s failed business ventures.
“Clearly, Donald Trump’s enormous, dare I say, huuuuge success as a businessman qualifies him to be President,” he said. “And if you believe that, I have some delicious Trump steaks to sell you.”
