A staffer for Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) resigned this weekend after he was arrested for allegedly attempting to solicit a prostitute, the Boston Globe reported on Saturday.

David Wihby, Ayotte’s state director in New Hampshire, was arrested on Friday night in Nashua, N.H., for the misdemeanor charge of soliciting a prostitute, according to the Globe.

In a statement on Saturday night, Ayotte said that she had accepted Wihby’s resignation.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened that David Wihby, my state director and a friend for many years, has been arrested under these circumstances,” she said. “David obviously cannot continue his duties, and I have accepted his resignation. This is a very difficult time, and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”

Wihby is also an elected member of the Manchester, N.H., school board and formerly served as a Manchester city alderman, according to the Globe.
