An eighth-grade student near Detroit, Michigan brought a gun to his middle school Thursday and committed suicide with a shot to the head in an upstairs bathroom, Detroit News reports:
The student, who they identified as a 14-year-old, shot himself once in the head with a .40 caliber Glock handgun before 8 a.m. classes began at the school. Another student found the boy in the bathroom and told a teacher, thinking he had a head injury.
“This was an isolated incident with just that student,” superintendent Bill Grusecki said Thursday at a press conference.
Grusecki said staff had no idea the student, whom he described as being “somewhat popular,” had a gun at the school located at 15800 Trenton Road, which doesn’t have metal detectors. Roughly 800 students attend the school.
Grusecki added the student hadn’t complained of being bullied and that school officials didn’t know what motivated the boy to commit suicide.
