The Proto-Nate?

Okay, this really doesn’t have anything to do with Nate Silver — apples and oranges. And I didn’t even know we were doing this piece. But this is awesome. Because I remember very well when this book came out. I think I even reviewed it on TPM at the time.

Back in 2002 my friends Ruy Teixeira and John Judis wrote a book called The Emerging Democratic Majority. The gist was that a new electoral majority of women, minorities and educated, mainly city-dwelling professionals was emerging which would be as potent as the one which led to Republican dominance through the 70s, 80s and 90s. It was prescient and deeply rooted in rooted in the data. There was only one problem: in the 2002 midterm election the Dems got whacked. So everyone just kind of forgot about it.

But that didn’t make it any less true. And in 2008 and especially in 2012 it finally started to emerge. We caught up with Ruy during today’s victory lap. Check it out. Really interesting stuff.
