In regards to your “toughness” discussion and Democrats’ sensitivity to it, I think it has a lot to do with some of the Democratic presidential nominees of the past.
So Obama, a tremendously successful and meteoric politician, has one bad night and a bunch of liberals are throwing up their hands and just about ready to accept the impending doom. I think it has a lot to do with the insecurity that we are returning to the days when the Democrats just couldn’t get a president elected because they fielded such “weak” politicians. Think Carter 80, Mondale 84, & Dukakis 88… The Titanic, the Hindenburg, and the Chicago Cubs 2003.
Yes, Obama has to step it up a notch and I’m sure he will (remember his turnaround after getting obliterated by a very tough Hillary in the ABC-hosted debate?). But the shrieking coming from liberal quarters is a bit amusing. Obama isn’t the Black Jimmy Carter. He’s the Black Dwight Eisenhower. Or whatever.
