Apres Moi, Le Semi-Automatic?

Greg Sargent dug up a recent radio interview in which Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle suggested that if Congress keeps up its current policy agenda the people may need to resort to violent struggle against the United States Government. To quote her specifically …

If this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies and saying my goodness what can we do to turn this country around? I’ll tell you the first thing we need to do is take Harry Reid out.

Now, when I heard that I thought, No, wait a second. That’s not new. I’ve heard that before. And just recently. Well, Greg and I were both kind of right. I couldn’t find any references to that quote in Google prior to Greg’s piece. But my memory was right. She just seems to say stuff like this a lot. Last month in an interview with the Reno Gazette-Journal, she said this …

“What is a little bit disconcerting and concerning is the inability for sporting goods stores to keep ammunition in stock,” she said. “That tells me the nation is arming. What are they arming for if it isn’t that they are so distrustful of their government? They’re afraid they’ll have to fight for their liberty in more Second Amendment kinds of ways?

“That’s why I look at this as almost an imperative. If we don’t win at the ballot box, what will be the next step?”

Now, people speak metaphorically a lot. And they’ll sometimes refer to Thomas Jefferson’s famous line about a revolution being a good thing once a generation or even his more sanguine line that the ‘tree of liberty’ must be “refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots.” But because it’s Jefferson those lines have been grandfathered in as acceptable metaphoric.

Here though Angle really does seem to be pretty explicitly saying her election and the election of folks like her might be our last chance to prevent a violent revolt by Tea Partiers and fellow traveling folk who’ve decided its time to string up the current crew and install themselves by force.
