This is a nugget of reporting from Maggie Haberman of the Times about the departure Kirstjen Nielsen from the Department of Homeland Security.
People close to her say one reason – perhaps not only one – is that she was aware how awful life would/will be for her on the outside after defending his policies for a long tome. https://t.co/XghCBWhNNw

Whether this is true or not I do not know.
I’m not sure whether it’s worse if it’s true or being a deceptive after-the-fact lo-fi plea for sympathy. It makes Nielsen sound like one of those long-in-the-tooth dictators who might be willing to take their stolen gains and decamp to the French Riviera but know that once they loosen their grip victims or a UN tribunal will soon enough catch up with them.
The most generous read of this is that she knew that once she left DHS she would be damaged goods to people with consciences. So best to stay in place overseeing disgraceful actions to put that moment off for as long as possible.
It is remarkable the kind of people the Trump administration is made of.
