It was the work of the House Select Committee on Benghazi that first broke the news that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had used a private email server in her tenure at the State Department, but Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC)–the chairman of that committee–had no statement on the FBI’s conclusion Tuesday that Clinton had not violated the law.
“Congressman Gowdy does not plan on commenting on this issue since the server and classified issues were not his or the committee’s focus,” said Amanda Gonzalez, a spokesman from his office, said Tuesday.
Gowdy’s office however noted that the issue would never have even been investigated by the FBI if it had not been for the Select Committee on Benghazi.
“Of course, none of the Secretary of State’s emails would have been discovered if not for the work of the Select Committee on Benghazi,” Gonzalez said. “Still, her emails and her server were never the focus of our investigation. It was necessary for the committee to obtain the emails related to Libya, and this committee is the first and only Benghazi investigation to do so.”
The Select Committee’s report on the deadly terror attack in Benghazi, Libya was released last week. In that report, there was no new evidence of wrongdoing by Clinton.
