Ahmed Mohamed And The American Myth Of The Individual White Inventor

The Gist: The Texas teenager’s arrest can be contextualized in a longstanding set of American narratives that valorize heroic white inventors while minimizing equally significant non-white inventors.

Trump Doesn’t Correct Voter Who Says Obama Is Muslim, Not American

The Gist: A town hall attendee asked Trump about secret jihadist training camps and what America can do to “get rid of” Muslims. Trump’s response? “We’re going to be looking at that.”

Texas Guv Says Muslim Teen Shouldn’t Have Been Arrested

Fueling the government shutdown drama is talk that the group of conservative lawmakers leading the charge are also trying to oust House Speaker John Boehner. His No. 2, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, shot down speculation of a coup attempt, according to TPM reporter Tierney Sneed. “We have an election every two years to pick our speaker, we’ve had that election and now let’s move on,” McCarthy said at a Thursday press conference.

The “dangerous, discredited ideas” proposed by the 2016 GOP candidates during the debate are simply “a race to embrace Bush foreign policy on steroids,” writes Josh Marshall.

Say What?!

“I have to admit that watching the debate reminded me a little bit of a tough day at the airport. You saw a dozen people in suits who are lined up at kiosks in front of a plane. They seemed angry, they seemed pessimistic, and they’re looking for somebody to threaten.”

-White House spokesman Josh Earnest talked to reporters about the second GOP debate.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “Those of us in the midwest have been confused how [Walker] got this far with out anyone noticing who he really is. He received good press for years because, of course, he is so tight with the Koch machine. And, I guess the media, and people who want to be spoon fed their politics, love a guy who “stands up to” those persnickety state legislators and unions. But, we knew the minute anyone would actually LISTEN to him speak, he was doomed. He is a dull speaker, and really not that intelligent on issues. Also, somehow the media has liked to tout him as turning his state around in a fiscal upswing, nothing could be further from the truth. He is truly like the Wizard of Oz.”

Related: Scott Walker said the media would have crowned Carly Fiorina the winner of the GOP debate “no matter what.”
