President Donald Trump made one of his most direct statements against anti-Semitism yet in a interview Tuesday, TPM’s Matt Shuham reported. “I do all the time. I do all the time,” Trump told MSNBC’s Craig Melvin, when asked if he would denounce anti-Semitism. “I think it’s terrible. I think it’s horrible, whether it’s anti-Semitism or racism or anything you want to think about having to do with the divide. Anti-Semitism is likewise, it’s just terrible,”
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “We live in troubled times. Hate and barbarity are always with us. But today they are being granted permission to act. Like the wink and a nod one gives to dissolute youth to help them along to do evil. It’s part of what I’ve called the ‘great disinhibition’. All of this can only be fought – mercilessly. It must also be understood, yes. But only in a pragmatic and instrumental fashion to fight it more effectively, more totally. I think of the fighters of the Warsaw Ghetto, the Jewish partisans rising out of their displaced persons camps who took vengeance on Nazis in the months and years after the War. No one of age is an infant and none deserve coddling. Of course the tide of barbarism is not only upon us. It has taken critical high ground. It is coming for Jews, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Muslims, every group that is marginalized. We must fight it everywhere and not simply with words and ideas. It’s a fight, not a metaphor. Treat it that way.”
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “Trump’s hard core support will never leave him, never ever never infinity! he showed them who he was in the runup to the election and they loved it and love this; he is sticking it to us and as miserable as we are…they are equally as giddy. not even that his policies will hurt them will move them off their love for him. we need to accept that reality. his soft core support will rub off the edges over time, but not in droves and not in any real way. these are the GOP team players. they always voted GOP, will always vote GOP, they like the concept that the policies are going their way and while they say they detest him on the surface…deep down they love it and revel in it. their team is winning. even though they are the elites, they hate the elites. don’t try to make sense of it, there is no sense in it. we are in Alice in Wonderland territory. remember, he got elected. that is prima facie crazy…don’t try to think too hard about it. if he goes, my gut is it will be sudden and unexpected. something we don’t see or expect. this stuff that is going on now, it’s gornischt, nothing, just fog and distraction.”
