5 Points On How Hillary Clinton Changed Her Whole Approach In Thursday’s Debate

The Gist: Going mano a mano against Bernie Sanders—days after they essentially tied in Iowa—Clinton’s performance at the MSNBC debate was that of someone who no longer thought her nomination was inevitable.

The Gist: Once seen as the inevitable GOP nominee, Bush now regularly cracks self-aware jokes about his less-than-stellar standing in the race.

Republicans are making a last-minute push for New Hampshire voters ahead of Saturday’s debate and Tuesday’s caucus. And, as TPM’s Caitlin Cruz points out, they’re getting increasingly ridiculous. Carly Fiorina is blaming ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos for lobbying to keep her out of the debate. Chris Christie, who has hung most of his presidential aspirations on New Hampshire, is firing off about Marco Rubio’s lack of experience, which Rick Santorum accidentally highlighted while endorsing the Florida senator.

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall on Thursday’s MSNBC debate: “We have two basic questions coming out of this debate: vision for the Democratic party and electability. Nor are these questions distinct. The issue of electability goes to the heart of the vision for the party, since it goes to the root of questions about pragmatism, risk aversion, settling for half or quarter loaves or ending up with nothing.”

Say What?!

“I would say take a chill pill, let the democracy work, let people go see who the candidates are, what their record is, what detailed plans they have.”

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “An article on Vox talked about how Clinton was prepping a strategy of propping up Martin O’Malley because his supporters were projected to go to Sanders and without at least 15% of the vote, by the rules, Martin’s supporters had to go elsewhere. So the plan was to make sure he got his 15% by essentially giving him some of Clinton’s voters. Of course this is mostly academic since O’Malley left the race in the middle of the contest but it’s still shrewd and smart and they had technology there to assist them with running the tactic real time. Sanders’ spokesman came out and chided her campaign as “sad” and said it was “telling” about her campaign when the stark truth is the exact opposite. It’s Sanders’ campaign that has become sad and its statement was telling; Sanders is calling Clinton for using ‘cheap tactics’ and denying the talent of his opponent because of his own inexperience and inability to overcome core aspects of the election that were already mastered by Clinton. Sanders had an advantage to O’Malley’s support collapsing in Iowa and a vested interest in that happening — but it’s something that his camp has tried to turn around on Clinton and pretend that he’s not trying the same thing. It’s the exact same as when he tried to pretend he wasn’t criticizing her when he plainly was and got his ass called out on it. Sanders is trying to shame Clinton into running a race that he can win rather than learning and playing the game better. Bernie Sanders is a scrub and a scrub is a guy who can’t get no vote from me. Hanging out the passenger’s side of his campaign ride tryin to holla at me…”
