This Week: Trump Administration Describes Unpaid Workers As Wall Leverage

Comments this week by various members of the Trump administration have underscored the extent to which the President views government workers as bargaining chips. Presidential daughter-in-law Lara Trump made that explicit in an interview Monday, referring to unpaid workers as the President’s “hand to play” and “what he has right now”: Leverage for border wall money. If you are one of those 800,000 federal employees working, or not working, without pay, cheer up. You’re only one third of one percent of the nation’s GDP! Nothing to worry about. That’s the gist of a quote from Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross: “While I feel sorry for the individuals that have hardship cases, 800,000 workers if they never got their pay —  which is not the case, they will eventually get it, but if they never got it — you’re talking about a third of a percent on our GDP so it’s not like it’s a gigantic number overall,” he told CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin.…
