President Donald Trump has repeatedly invoked the “crisis” on the southern border as justification for his desired border wall, and has even threatened to declare an emergency — which he says he has an “absolute right” to do — in order to circumvent Congress and build a wall. But that doesn’t mean he can’t fundraise off of it, right? That’s just what Trump’s reelection campaign did ahead of his primetime Oval Office speech to the American people Tuesday night, emailing supporters: “We need to raise $5OO,OOO in ONE DAY” and offering to send donors’ names to Trump. Donations would be made to “our Official Secure the Border Fund,” the email said, but that fund didn’t seem to exist: The money would go, as usual, to Trump and the Republican Party for their political efforts. Trump on Wednesday formally nominated the acting administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Andrew Wheeler, to lead the agency permanently.
