Golden Dukes
Latest pool report from Toronto and a whiff of marijuana in the air …
The TPM delegation heard our first Rob Ford joke within thirty minutes of arriving in Toronto.
As Yumi and I rode a shuttle bus into the city, the driver was talking with another man about the recent ice storm and quipped about how “comforting it was to know Rob Ford was in charge.”
That bus ride was part of our arduous, journey that involved travel on foot, by plane, boat, bus, and car. When it was all over, we reached our hotel, which is literally across the street from Toronto City Hall. In fact, the hotel and City Hall use the same underground parking garage. When we pulled in to park, there was an intense and unmistakeable odor of marijuana smoke. However, Mayor Ford was nowhere in sight.

TPM is pleased to announce that we will be awarding our Seventh Annual Golden Dukes on Friday, Dec. 27, in recognition of the year’s best purveyors of public corruption, outlandish behavior and The Crazy.
The awards are named in honor of former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, who epitomizes the iconic modern scandal. Each year we single out those practitioners of scandal who through their own unmatched bumbling, shameless behavior, criminality or mere derp have set new standards for public corruption, betrayal of the public trust and general ridiculousness. This year’s award is sponsored by Media Matters, which also gives out its own annual award, Misinformer of the Year, given for the biggest errors by a media figure/institution in 2013.
As a special muck-tastic addition this year, there will be an actual Golden Duke statuette sculpted and cast as tribute to the big winner.
And now for the esteemed judges and proud nominees …

As you know if you’re a core TPM Reader, the Golden Dukes are coming. And momentum and excitement are already starting to build.
But this year we’re considering something new. The famed Golden Dukes statuette has existed going back to 2007. But it’s always just been an image, a mere concept in our quest for the ultimate scandal. Well, this year we are considering actually commissioning the actual statuette and bestowing it in person to the winner of the Best Scandal – General Interest.
The Golden Dukes are in their 6th Year! Our annual awards to honor the standout performers in scandal, public corruption and where appropriate simple ridiculousness and Teh Crazy.
Ladies and Gentlemen, here are your winners!
