Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) has pulled ahead of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Iowa by a slim 5-point margin, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Tuesday.

The poll showed Sanders beating Clinton 49-44 percent in Iowa. This result contrasts sharply with Quinnipiac’s December poll, which put Clinton ahead at 51 percent to Sanders’ 40 percent in the state. But the new poll is consistent with a number of recent surveys that have shown Sanders pulling ahead in Iowa since the fall, when Clinton mostly led the polls.

The Vermont senator also won the support of men by an overwhelming margin, 61-30 percent, while Clinton led among women by a smaller but still substantial margin, 55-39 percent. College-educated caucusgoers supported Clinton 49-45, while those without degrees supported Sanders 51-41.

The Quinnipiac poll surveyed 492 likely Democratic caucusgoers by live-phone interview from Jan. 5-10. It had a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.
