President Donald Trump trashed former Defense Secretary James Mattis during a Cabinet meeting Wednesday, and said he’d “essentially” fired the retired Marine Corps general, when in fact Mattis resigned with a harsh letter to the President last month.
A few days after receiving that letter, Trump shoved Mattis out the door two months early.
“What’s he done for me?” Trump said of Mattis Wednesday. “How has he done in Afghanistan? Not too good. Not too good. I’m not happy with what he’s done in Afghanistan.”
The President has said he will withdraw half of the 14,000 American troops serving in Afghanistan.
