Mayor Accused Of Corruption Led Out In Handcuffs After Disrupting Meeting

CRYSTAL CITY, Texas (AP) — A Texas mayor accused of public corruption spent the night in jail after allegedly disrupting a City Council meeting as he fights a recall effort.

Jail records show Crystal City Mayor Ricardo Lopez was being held Wednesday on charges that include hindering a proceeding by disorderly conduct. The records don’t indicate whether he has an attorney.

Lopez was arrested Tuesday night during a meeting over a recall petition he faces after he and two council members were indicted in a bribery and conspiracy investigation. Another member faces human smuggling charges.

Adamant he had time to decide whether to resign, Lopez recessed the meeting. Upon his return, multiple media outlets reported, he scuffled with an angry audience member. Television video shows Lopez being handcuffed and put into a police car.
