President Donald Trump on Wednesday defended his refusal to ask the FBI to broaden its background investigation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to include the multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against him, saying “there was nothing to investigate.”
“They didn’t know the location, they didn’t know the time, they didn’t know the year,” Trump said, though that is not true for the now-multiple allegations against Kavanaugh.
He also misattributed a quote from former Vice President Joe Biden, who Trump claims said “They don’t do this,” referring to the FBI. In fact, it was Trump himself who said of the FBI: “They don’t do that.”
“They know it’s a big, fat con job,” Trump said of Democrats. “And they go into a room, and I guarantee you, they laugh like hell at what they pulled off on you and on the public. They laugh like hell.”
“So it wouldn’t have mattered if the FBI came back with the cleanest score,” he continued. “And you understand that very well, John. If they would have come back with the most perfect, ‘We found everything and he’s perfectly innocent of everything.’ It wouldn’t have made a difference. You wouldn’t have gotten one vote.”
