Bob McDonnell, the GOP nominee for Governor in Virginia, was on FOX News Sunday this morning. Apparently his Democratic opponent Creigh Deeds was invited too, but declined to sit down with McDonnell and Chris Wallace.

McDonnell was able to stick to his conservative-values, limited-government, pro-business talking points for much of the interview. But there were a couple of interesting moments.

Wallace asked McDonnell about his controversial graduate school thesis, which slammed gays, unwed mothers and no-fault divorce — and the revelation of which coincided with Deeds’ closing the gap in some polls.

McDonnell said of the controversial passages of his thesis: “Those are a couple quotes out of a 100-page document” and that it’s just “a quote or two out of that old thesis” (which he wrote at age 34). He also said that “some of my views over time have changed.”

Later, Wallace showed a Deeds campaign ad that skewered McDonnell’s desire to “outlaw abortion, even in cases of rape and incest.”

McDonnell said the ad “has got several errors” and said of Deeds: “Many of his ads are just outright lies. They’re not honest. They’re deceitful.”
