Liz Cheney, speaking last night at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, attacked the Obama administration for its recent handling of Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai.
Karzai has recently accused outside countries of meddling with Afghanistan’s elections and suggested he would join the Taliban. In response, the White House called his remarks “troubling,” and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs refused to call Karzai an “ally” when questioned by reporters.
Cheney called the reaction “dangerous and juvenile.”
“Afghan President Karzai, whose support we need if we are going to prevail in Afghanistan, is being treated to an especially dangerous and juvenile display from this White House,” she said. “They dress him down on an almost daily basis, and within the last 36 hours refused to say whether he is even an ally.”
“You know, I used to work on the Middle East, and there is a saying in the Arab world: ‘It is more dangerous to be America’s friend than it is to be our enemy,'” she went on. “And I fear very much that in the age of Obama, that’s proving to be true.”
