FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — James Comer has conceded the governor’s race in Kentucky, ending a tumultuous Republican primary and handing the nomination to Louisville businessman Matt Bevin.

In a news release Friday morning, Comer said he called Bevin and conceded minutes after a Thursday review of the May 19 primary results showed Bevin maintained his 83-vote lead in one of the closest elections in state history. Comer delayed conceding publicly until the morning to give him time to contact some of his most important supporters.

Bevin has scheduled a news conference at the Republican Party of Kentucky’s headquarters for 10 a.m. Friday along with the other Republican nominees in November’s general election.

Comer said he enthusiastically endorses Bevin’s candidacy, saying he grew to appreciate his knowledge of issues, his work ethic and his morals.

  1. KY just became competitive for Democrats in a year that they were thought to be in trouble. Bevin has a history running against Mitch and there is no love lost there. This might be a hold for Dems. Bevin would be a disaster. He already said he wants to abolish Kynect…the most successful ACA exchange out there (in true TP form)

  2. I’m very interested to hear from our KY brethren here on TPM as to how they think this will/could shake out. From what I’ve heard, Beven’s win, indeed, makes this more competitive for KY Dems. Having said that, I also heard something similar when the curly headed simp was running against Conway.

Where the heck is Plucky? She’s one of the reasons I come here so often, but she’s disappeared.

I’m a little skeptical about this automatically making this a hold for the Dems. Alison Lundergan Grimes was supposed to be a real threat to McConnell, and ended up getting whupped badly.
